Biodolomer for LIFE to present at conference focusing on plastics in the circular economy in Helsingborg on April 26th

Åke Rosén, founder of GAIA BioMaterials, will deliver a speech at “Recyclingdagen i Helsingborg”, focusing on the additional benefits of bioplastics – Biodolomer® in particular – as compared with other materials and how it all links into the circular economy and Biodolomer for LIFE.

“Recyclingdagen i Helsingborg” is an annual event arranged by the magazine Recycling, Sweden’s leading news company covering the recycling and waste management industries from a B2B perspective. This year’s theme is “Plastics’ role in the  circular economy”.

Biodolomer for Life participated in panel discussion on plastic pollution

On February 26th Biodolomer® for Life was invited to participate in a panel discussion regarding the growing problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, as fossil plastics add to the plastic sea belts, as well as the microplastics content, causing great harm to both environment and wildlife.

The panel discussion was held in conjunction with the screening of the new documentary “Plastic Ocean”, which highlights the rapidly growing problems with plastics in the oceans. The screening took place in Ängelholm and was attenced by leading local politicians and scientists focusing on the problems with plastic pollution.

Martin Dyberg, Strategic Communicator at NSR AB and Vera Park, was representing Biodolomer® for Life during the panel discussion, during which he shared information about the project and the circular economy, as well as showing samples of products made from Biodolomer®, such as shopping bags, waste bags, food trays and bottles, which will not only contribute to solving the problems with plastc pollution, but also help closing the loop in the circular economy by turning into mulch and biogas when in an industrial compost.

Lions Bjuv given presentation about Biodolomer® for Life

On January 18th Biodolomer® for LIFE welcomed the Bjuv Lions chapter to a visit at the NSR plant. The visitors were given a tour of the plant, as well as information concerning how recycling works. They were also given a presentation about Biodolomer® for Life and how products made from Biodolomer® can contribute to the circular economy due to its biodegradable and compostable qualities, which allows for it to be turned into biogas.

Biodolomer for Life will participate in Plastic Ocean Panel discussion in Ängelholm on February 26th

Plastic Ocean

On February 26th Biodolomer® for Life has been invited to participate during a panel discussion, during the screening of the film “Plastic Ocean”, regarding the growing problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, as fossil plastics add to the plastic sea belts, as well as the microplastics content, causing great harm to both environment and wildlife.

Martin Dyberg, Strategic Communicator at NSR AB and Vera Park, is representing Biodolomer® for Life during the panel discussion and will share information about the project and the circular economy, as well as the benefits with Biodolomer®.

The panel discussion is taking place as part of the screening of the documentary film “Plastic Ocean”, which addresses the problems associated with 10 million tons of plastics ending up in the environment – in the ocean and on land – every year.

Biodolomer® for Life exhibited during SHL game at Lindab Arena in Ängelholm

Swedish Hockey League team Rögle BK had kindly invited the Biodolomer® for Life project to exhibit at the club’s sustainability day. The day was arranged on December 26th, during their game against Linköping HC. It was part of the club’s efforts to work for a sustainable future; both as a youth player academy, as well as a dedicated member of society.

Approximately 4700 people had decided to put their Christmas celebration on hold and instead visit Lindab Arena. The exhibition was open for the audience before and during the game. Biodolomer for Life had been given a place just inside of the entrance, with unimpeded exposure towards the visitors. This proved to be the ideal place from which to showcase our messages and product samples, as well as striking up conversations with passersby. Interested visitors had the opportunity to learn more about Biodolomer®, renewable fully biodegradable biomaterials and the circular economy. They were also  shown how the Biodolomer for Life project fits into it all.

Judging by the reactions, interest in biomaterials is gaining momentum, with negative side effects from plastics being common knowledge. However, the information provided by producers and retailers regarding the environmental attributes of their products often are difficult to understand. Claims of being “green” or “recyclable”, whilst factually correct, does not always mean what the consumers believe they mean. Instead, many of these products are not biodegradable or recyclable and will not fit into the circular economy.

Helsingborg promotes biomaterials over fossil-based plastics

In a debate article published in the Swedish newspaper Kvällsposten on Sunday, Helsingborg’s City Council announced that by 2020, the city will stop buying fossil-based plastic products, with the aim of completely removing plastics from the city’s residual waste in 2035.

Everyone’s responsibility to act

In the article, Helsingborg’s City Council especially emphasized that it is everyone’s responsibility to act, as the solutions to the plastic problem are mostly local, which is why the city will do its part in contributing to the solution. For the City of Helsingborg, this means working to have framework agreements in place that prioritize fossil-free and degradable products above fossil plastics. The same will apply when the city makes municipal land available for events and activities, such as market squares, food trucks, and more. Procurements of goods and services that amount to well over a billion SEK annually, together with a long list of lease agreements, gives the City of Helsingborg the muscles to support this goal.

The announced efforts are part of Helsingborg’s long-term environmental work, which led to ranking  first in Aktuell Hållbarhet’s annual list over best environment municipalities in 2017.

We will do our part through Biodolomer® for Life

GAIA BioMaterials welcomes the City of Helsingborg’s initiative and praises their courage to “walk the talk” – something we have long called for from public officials and organizations. As a local company with cutting edge expertise within this field, we will do our utmost to help the City of Helsingborg to achieve these goals. GAIA – together with its business partners – are already offering a large number of biodegradable bio-based products that cover most of the municipality of Helsingborg’s needs for realizing the 2020 fossil plastic-free procurement objective, as well as the long-term goal of fossil plastic-free waste handling by 2035 .

GAIA BioMaterials is already running the project “Biodolomer® for Life” together with Båstad Municipality and NSR AB, with financial support from the EU’s LIFE program. The goal is to replace fossil plastics with GAIA’s biodegradable and compostable biomaterial Biodolomer®, thus closing the loop in the “Circular Economy”.

GAIA BioMaterials Åke Rosén is awarded Helsingborg’s environmental award

GAIA’s founder, inventor and enthusiast Åke Rosén, has been awarded the City of Helsingborg’s environmental award for 2017. The award is shared with the Food Cooperative, a local initiative to offer locally produced and organic food. It was announced on Tuesday morning in a press release.

The jury, consisting of the presidium of the Environment Committee and the City Planning Board, as well as the City Environment Director, City Planning Director and Business Director, explains the appointment as follows:

“Åke’s mission in life is to constantly develop climate-smart materials for packaging in the food industry and to offer the global market more sustainable packaging solutions.”

The award ceremony took place on Wednesday and Åke Rosén was, understandably, both proud and happy about the prize: “It is said that you never become a prophet in your hometown but here I stand, with an award for my work to improve the environment from my own home town. Now, it would be far from me to look at myself as a prophet, but the one who coined the expression clearly did not have Helsingborg in mind. ”

Though Åke Rosén is very pleased to be recognized for his work, it’s not what’s motivating him to continue:

“We must remove the plastic from our lives and use as little as possible from Earth’s resources. We need to replace fossil fuels with renewable raw materials that can be transformed into renewable energy. If everyone were to live as we do in Helsingborg we would need three Earths – it’s scary and unsustainable.

With our biodegradable and renewable biomaterial Biodolomer®, we will not only remove the plastic from our lives; we will also be able to close the loop in the circular economy, something we work on in the “Biodolomer for Life” project, which is jointly run together with NSR and the municipality of Båstad, with support from the EU’s LIFE program. ”

The City of Helsingborg’s environmental award was established in 2008 in order to stimulate the environmental commitment of the city’s residents, organizations and companies.

Biodolomer for Life participated at Vera Park event

On November 28th NSR AB and Vera Park presented the results from a survey undertaken by the University of Lund on behalf of Vera Park at Lindab Arena in Ängelholm. Vera Park also presented the new website that was launched just days before, including the section where the Biodolomer for Life project was presented.

Biodolomer® for Life participating at the LIFE platform meeting on plastic & the circular economy in Athens, Greece.

During September 21st – 22nd the National Technical University of Athens hosted the LIFE platform meeting on plastic recycling, in Athens (Greece).

Biodolomer® for Life’s representative at the Life project was Ulf Kullenius, Chairman of the Board of GAIA BioMaterials, one of three project partners; the other two being Båstad Municipality and NSR AB.

During his visit, Mr. Kullenius mentioned especially the two keynote speaker presentations on the role of plastics in a circular economy, from both the policy and from an industrial perspective. He also participated in a workshop in which LIFE project teams explained how they were increasing the amount of plastic waste going into the circular economy, as well as a workshop on bioplastics.

– I had been looking forward to the opportunity to learn more about what other initiatives that are out there, working on how to reduce the environmental impact of plastics, as well as closing the loop of the circular economy within the LIFE program. I am pleased to say that the LIFE platform meeting met my expectations, as I have gained a lot of new insights, made some new and exciting networking contacts that I look forward to share with the other project members, Mr. Kullenius said.

The LIFE platform meeting ended with a visit to the now closed LIFE project ENERGY-WASTE (LIFE09 ENV/GR/000307) north of Athens, where its gasification concept for the energy exploitation of the non-recyclable steam was demonstrated.


 

The Biodolomer® for LIFE project is a joint partnership between Båstad Municipality, GAIA Biomaterials AB and NSR AB aimed at showing how fossil-based and energy intensive plastics and packaging materials can be replaced by Gaia BioMaterials renewable and biodegradable biomaterial Biodolomer®, whilst at the same time contributing to closing the loop for the circular economy.

The Project has received financial support from EUs funding instrument for the environment and climate action, the LIFE programme.

Helsingborgshem´s garden maintenance team at NSR AB in Helsingborg

A delegation of more than 30 people from Helsingborgshem’s garden maintenance team visited NSR in order to find out more about what happens with the waste when it comes to the recycling facility.

The guests were also presented with “Biodolomer® for Life”, an EU sponsored project within the LIFE program, where GAIA together with Båstad Municipality and NSR will evaluate the potential of the fully compostable and biologically degradable biomaterial Biodolomer®.
