Biodolomer for Life will participate in Plastic Ocean Panel discussion in Ängelholm on February 26th

Plastic Ocean

On February 26th Biodolomer® for Life has been invited to participate during a panel discussion, during the screening of the film “Plastic Ocean”, regarding the growing problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, as fossil plastics add to the plastic sea belts, as well as the microplastics content, causing great harm to both environment and wildlife.

Martin Dyberg, Strategic Communicator at NSR AB and Vera Park, is representing Biodolomer® for Life during the panel discussion and will share information about the project and the circular economy, as well as the benefits with Biodolomer®.

The panel discussion is taking place as part of the screening of the documentary film “Plastic Ocean”, which addresses the problems associated with 10 million tons of plastics ending up in the environment – in the ocean and on land – every year.

Biodolomer® for Life exhibits in Helsingborg this Saturday (2018-02-10)

Biodolomer® for Life has been invited to exhibit during the Event “Den odlande stadsbasaren” (The cultivating city bazaar) at Oxhallen in Helsingborg on Saturday February 10th.

The event is part of a pilot project to promote “innovation for sustainable urban development in Helsingborg, Landskrona and Stockholm” and aims to explore the opportunities associated with green workplaces and companies, as sustainable and integral neighborhoods through urban cultivation is a strong trend in large cities globally.

During the event Biodolomer for Life will present how products made from Biodolomer® can help further this aim through the innovative nature of the material, which is fully biodegradable biomaterial made with renewable ingredients. This to realize the goal of creating the circular economy.

The exhibition will be open  between 12:00 – 16:00 and the event between 12:00 and 19:00

December 26th Biodolomer® for Life will be at Lindab Arena for Rögle – Linköping game

Biodolomer® for Life – via NSR and Vera Park – has been invited to attend the SHL-game Rögle BK – Linköping on December 26th at Lindab Arena, in order to emphasize the club’s commitment to the environment and sustainable living.

From 13:45, when the Arena opens to the public, until 15:15, when the game starts, we will have an exhibition stand and inform about the Biodolomer for Life project, in particular:

  • The scope and aims of the Biodolomer for Life project, as well as what LIFE is.
  • Biodolomer and how it differs from plastics and other bioplastics
  • Biodolomer compared with other materials, such as paper, fossil plastics and other bioplastics

A wide range of sample products made from Biodolomer will be on display, showing how fossil plastics – as well as other materials – can be replaceed by Biodolomer.

We invite everyone interested in hockey and the environment to come visit us before face-off.

Biodolomer for Life participated at Vera Park event

On November 28th NSR AB and Vera Park presented the results from a survey undertaken by the University of Lund on behalf of Vera Park at Lindab Arena in Ängelholm. Vera Park also presented the new website that was launched just days before, including the section where the Biodolomer for Life project was presented.

Biodolomer® for Life presented at sustainability event in Helsingborg

Biodolomer® for Life (hereafter Biodolomer for Life) has participated in the sustainability event “Framtidsjakten” (“Future Hunt”) in Helsingborg.

“Framtidsjakten” is an annual event that focuses on raising awareness among the students at three of Helsingborg’s upper secondary high schools with regards to sustainability based on a number of different criterias.

As part of the ambition to raise the awareness among the students concerning the circular economy and biodegradable biomaterials, representatives from Biodolomer for Life had been invited to make a presentation to students representing all the participating teams from each school.

During two half hour sessions, the students learned more about the LIFE program and how it supports environmental, nature conservation and climate action projects throughout the EU, one of which being the Biodolomer for Life project.

They were also shown how Biodolomer for Life intended to close the loop in the circular economy, in which the project members had very specific roles to play: GAIA BioMaterials responsible for developing a biomaterial – Biodolomer® (hereafter Biodolomer) that is not only renewable and biodegradable, but also generates biogas when composted, the municipality of Båstad responsible for identifying cost efficient ways of implementing the material into everyday operations by looking at the overall economic implications, and finally NSR AB responsible for ensuring that the biomaterial can be handled together with the rest of the organic waste stream to ensure that the composting is conducted in the most efficient way possible in order to ensure that all the products from the process (heating, CO2, biogas and mulch) are collected and used as input for generating new raw materials to be used as input in the production of Biodolomer.

Finally, Students were also told about the difference between not only plastics and biomaterials, but also what separates different biomaterials from each other, and why it is important to understand how these react when exposed to various conditions and situations. For example, not all bioplastics are biodegradable – unlike Biodolomer®, which is fully biodegradable – and the amount of CO2 released when incinerated is much higher for paper, as compared to both plastics and bioplastics, with Biodolomer being the material with by far the lowest CO2 levels.

On October 18th the local Annetorp Glumslöv chapter of SPF Seniorerna paid Gaia BioMaterials and the Biodolomer® for Life (hereafter Biodolomer for Life) project a visit to learn more about the company, biodegradable biomaterials made from renewable sources and Biodolomer for Life.

During the presentation GAIA BioMaterials founder Åke Rosén told visitors about the Biodolomer for Life project that the company is running jointly together with Båstad Municipality and NSR AB as part of the EUs LIFE program, with the purpose of finding solutions on how to close the loop for the circular economy, as well as the LIFE program itself and how it supports environmental, nature conservation and climate action projects throughout the EU, one of which being the Biodolomer for Life project. Mr. Rosén also showed examples of products made from the company’s unique biomaterial Biodolomer® and explained the qualities that makes it stand out, as compared to competing materials such as different sorts of plastics, other biomaterials and paper.

The visit also included a tour inside the production facility, where production process from raw materials – via pellets and film – to finished products were shown.

Biodolomer® for Life participating at the LIFE platform meeting on plastic & the circular economy in Athens, Greece.

During September 21st – 22nd the National Technical University of Athens hosted the LIFE platform meeting on plastic recycling, in Athens (Greece).

Biodolomer® for Life’s representative at the Life project was Ulf Kullenius, Chairman of the Board of GAIA BioMaterials, one of three project partners; the other two being Båstad Municipality and NSR AB.

During his visit, Mr. Kullenius mentioned especially the two keynote speaker presentations on the role of plastics in a circular economy, from both the policy and from an industrial perspective. He also participated in a workshop in which LIFE project teams explained how they were increasing the amount of plastic waste going into the circular economy, as well as a workshop on bioplastics.

– I had been looking forward to the opportunity to learn more about what other initiatives that are out there, working on how to reduce the environmental impact of plastics, as well as closing the loop of the circular economy within the LIFE program. I am pleased to say that the LIFE platform meeting met my expectations, as I have gained a lot of new insights, made some new and exciting networking contacts that I look forward to share with the other project members, Mr. Kullenius said.

The LIFE platform meeting ended with a visit to the now closed LIFE project ENERGY-WASTE (LIFE09 ENV/GR/000307) north of Athens, where its gasification concept for the energy exploitation of the non-recyclable steam was demonstrated.


 

The Biodolomer® for LIFE project is a joint partnership between Båstad Municipality, GAIA Biomaterials AB and NSR AB aimed at showing how fossil-based and energy intensive plastics and packaging materials can be replaced by Gaia BioMaterials renewable and biodegradable biomaterial Biodolomer®, whilst at the same time contributing to closing the loop for the circular economy.

The Project has received financial support from EUs funding instrument for the environment and climate action, the LIFE programme.

Helsingborgshem´s garden maintenance team at NSR AB in Helsingborg

A delegation of more than 30 people from Helsingborgshem’s garden maintenance team visited NSR in order to find out more about what happens with the waste when it comes to the recycling facility.

The guests were also presented with “Biodolomer® for Life”, an EU sponsored project within the LIFE program, where GAIA together with Båstad Municipality and NSR will evaluate the potential of the fully compostable and biologically degradable biomaterial Biodolomer®.

Biodolomer for Life exhibits at Swedish Open Tennis Tournament

With Båstad Municipality being one of the principal partners for Biodolomer for Life, the project was included into the Municipality’s exhibition at the 2017 Swedish Open Tennis Tournament.

Generally regarded as one of the most popular events on the ATP and WTA circus among both the players and the audience, the tournament’s exhibition hall proved to be an ideal place for introducing the Biodolomer for Life project to the public, as visitors were very interested in learning more about the project’s aim of developing a commercially viable circular economy, as well as the Biodolomer biomaterial and its applications.

Project Staff from Biodolomer for Life have been on site to guide and answer questions. Visitors have been impressed with the scope and ambition of the project, especially with the goal to create a circular economy based on a sustainable mindset combined with sound commercial considerations, and have left with a better understanding of what separates biomaterials from plastics – and from each other – as well as an appreciation for what must be done.

Will Båstad Municipality become plastic free?

Helsingborgs Dagblad reports that this may soon be the case, as Bo Wendt, the highest ranking Politician in Båstad, told the newspaper:

“I told our Local Officials that we, as a coastal municipality have to make this happen” he is quoted saying by Helsingborgs Dagblad.

Wendt made his statement, having visited a summit where environmental aspects in public purchasing was discussed. At the summit, GAIAs Åke Rosén presented the companys biomaterial Biodolomer and how it differed from other biomaterials in terms of biodegradability and other environmentally important aspects.

Biodolomer for Life presented to Procurement Specialists in Båstad

On July 20th Båstad Municipality hosted a seminar focusing on how public procurement can contribute to a fossil fuel and plastic free future by putting environmental requirements into their specifications.

One of the questions discussed was whether the suppliers were ready to meet such requirements, which was answered with a resounding “Yes”, by Åke Rosén from GAIA BioMaterials, one of the partners of the “Biodolomer for Life” project together with Båstad Municipality and NSR.

During his presentation, Åke Rosén showed that there already exist commercially viable alternatives to plastics – such as Gaia’s unique biomaterial Biodolomer, which is made from renewable resources and fully biodegradable – when you look at the whole picture, rather than just the purchase price.

Using Biodolomer as the starting point, the Biodolomer for Life project is focused on finding ways for closing the circular economy loop, thus making each step in the circle interact with the ones before and after, to ensure the most efficient use of both natural resources and public funds. This makes for a whole new approach, not only in terms of public procurement, but also when it comes to cooperation between departments and external partners.

GAIA BioMaterials welcomed the fourth graders from Lerbergsskolan Höganäs

GAIA BioMaterials welcomed the fourth graders from Lerbergsskolan Höganäs

On Friday June 2nd, GAIA BioMaterials had the great pleasure of welcoming Lerbergsskolan (the Lerberg school) in Höganäs’ fourth graders, as part of their project to reduce the use of plastics in society. The visit took place in conjunction with GAIA’s – together with NSR and Båstad municipality – celebration of the 25th anniversary of the LIFE program, as part of their joint project “Biodolomer® for Life”.

In addition to a tour of the plant and demonstration of the manufacturing process from raw material to finished product, via granules, the students, along with teachers and accompanying parents, were also given presentations about GAIA’s unique biomaterial Biodolomer®, replacing plastic in a wide variety of products thanks to Its biodegradability and compostability, as well as the LIFE program, “Biodolomer® for Life” and the circular economy.
During the visit, the students of the Lerberg school impressed with their good knowledge of biomaterials and plastics, the harmful effects of the late nature in the circular economy and posed profound and clear questions to the organizers.

Gaia Biomaterials at the Meeting Point Urban Magma

GAIA BioMaterials founder Åke Rosen was invited to present at Meeting Point Urban Magma, an annually re-occurring meeting place about the challenges cities face within energy, eco-system services, water and waste management; especially the tools necessary to solve these challenges. During his presentation, which was held together with Louise Strand, Purchasing Director at Region Skåne, Mr. Rosén spoke about the insights gained from having been part of a public innovation procurement process. Mr. Rosén also presented the company’s revolutionary biodegradable biomaterial Biodolomer® and how it can help close the loop for the circular economy through the efforts undertaken within Biodolomer® for LIFE; an EU financed project within the LIFE program that is undertaken together with Båstads Kommun and NSR AB.

Recycling day in Helsingborg

Recycling day in Helsingborg

The Annual Conference Recycling day the 17th of May in Helsingborg.

NSR AB opens the facility for environmental solutions that can contribute to a sustainable future and Vera Park is a cluster of environmental technology based in northwestern Skåne.

About 155 persons from the waste and recycling business area in Sweden participated at the conference and mini-fair called Recyclingdagen. Martin Dyberg, Strategic Communicator at Vera Park and Dusan Raicevic, Business Developer at Vera Park,  held a presentation about Vera Park – concept, companies and Projects within it, such as Biodolomer® for Life.

At the stand they showed up Gaia´s products and its partnership at Life Programme together with NSR AB, and Båstad Municipality. As well as other Vera Park companies products and services.

Avfall Sverige (Waste Management Sweden)

On May 16th Åke Rosén, founder of GAIA BioMaterials, was invited to make a presentation to Avfall Sverige´s (Waste Management Sweden) Pouch Project. Reason for this request was that GAIA´s unique biodegradable and compostable biomaterial Biodolomer® is currently evaluated in a Pilot Project run by NSR and HelsingborgsHem.

At this presentation Mr Rosén presented the advantages of using Biodolomer® food waste bags compared to paper bags. One of the major differences is that the GAIA bags show considerably lower bacterial and fungal formation on the outside of the bag.

The GAIA biomaterial food waste bags Pilot Project is part of the “Biodolomer® for Life!” project – an EU-financed project within the LIFE program – which aims to investigate and develop the business opportunities for products made by the Biodolomer® material from a circular economy perspective.

The Pouch Project aims to identify which qualities a food waste bag has to incorporate, as well as increase the understanding of food waste collection and treatment chains, as this will influence the requirements on waste bags in order to present a bag that not only meet these requirements, but also meets all environmental goals.
